Below is a short summary of the latest Community Meeting, followed by its chat logs – which have been gently edited for formatting, to put questions and answers in bold for easy skimming, and to omit greetings and farewells and other such asides. Meetings are hosted by Estate owner NeoBokrug Elytis at 2:00 pm on the first Saturday of every month at The Potato Farm in The Wastelands, and the discussion is typically divided into three main topics: Estate, Game, and Roleplay & Events. Everyone is welcome to attend!
ESTATE:
➳ Occupancy has held stable over the past month.
➳ Neo intends to start advertising The Wastelands on Primfeed, after making some graphics.
➳ A reminder that the cost of tier is based on the US Dollar: as the value of L$ in USD changes, you may be able to buy more or fewer L$ for the same amount of money, but the amount of USD you pay stays the same.
➳ Lately, the conversion rate has made it possible to buy more L$ for the same price – which means the same USD worth of tier now converts to a larger amount of L$. This might look like an increase in your tier price, but it’s actually adapting to make sure your actual costs stay the same.
➳ Neo will be applying this same USD-based tier price system to Caledon and New Toulouse soon, as well.
➳ Neo will be doing the annual parcel audit this month in order to make sure the described prices are right (and to give the unowned parcels new decor.)
➳ The code for the tier system will also be updated, but this is a large endeavor that probably won’t be done until the end of the year.
➳ This new system will also have new auto-pay tier meters that let you choose when to get reminders, how many weeks to pay, and could even pay all your parcels with one tool.
➳ LL is considering removing the server cost from the LI calculation. This could allow for more prims on parcels.
➳ Neo attended the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco and got to meet with several Lindens, tour Linden Lab, and learn news about SL directly from Brad Oberwolf and Philip Linden!
➳ LL’s refocusing on developing SL as a platform, rather than creating as much of its own content that can be seen as competing against resident creators.
➳ More under-the-hood improvements are happening with the desktop viewer to work out some PBR issues and make things more efficient on old hardware, as well.
➳ The browser-based Zero Viewer is not likely to remain free forever, but should make SL much more accessible to users on older hardware.
➳ The mobile viewer will probably facilitate people participating by hanging out and communicating, if not the full experience of building, etc.
➳ LL wants the Zero Viewer to direct new users to new-user-friendly places – and Neo is going to suggest Northgate for it.
➳ If anyone would like to be a point of contact for new users in Northgate who have questions about using SL, contact Neo through an IM or Discord!
GAME:
➳ The Battle for Burnt Oak will likely be redeployed on some weekend this month.
➳ Northgate Zombies will probably also be found shambling in Burnt Oak, as well.
➳ Nests will spawn starting on the 13th and continue through the 20th.
➳ Scythejaw will once again be boiling and painting WL: Eggs into WL: Revival Eggs, but there may or may not be a new design this year.
➳ Neo does not expect to be able to make many game updates this year.
ROLEPLAY & EVENTS:
➳ The Red Revival returns on Saturday, April 19! If you wamt to perform, or if you currently RP a Manimal or Human and want to take the opportunity to go Ghoul, contact Apo!
➳ The Red Parade will precede it on Friday, April 18: Doktor Pileus will lead a merry, mouldering band of Ghouls around the Wastes (and potentially elsewhere,) making a godsawful din.
➳ Neo intends for The Wastelands to have a spot in the next round of the Community Exhibition, but is unsure when that will be.
➳ Early notice that PROMAGEDDON will be on Saturday, May 31!

NeoBokrug Elytis: First things first, occupancy has remained relatively the same over the past month. I am going to throw an ad on primfeed for The Wastelands later in the month. Hopefully that will draw more folks in.

NeoBokrug Elytis: Lets talk about USD to the L$.
NeoBokrug Elytis: Some of you may have noticed that you can buy more L$ with your real dollars. At the same time your tier is slowly creeping up to keep pace with that.

NeoBokrug Elytis: This is by design, and has been this way for about 15 years now.
NeoBokrug Elytis: The same happens when the value of the USD to the L$ goes up. You buy less, and your tier goes down.

NeoBokrug Elytis: It was a flaw I saw in other estates, where they’d constantly have to make adjustments to the tier. Here at The Wastelands, I price my parcels by USD, rather than L$. On the parcel descriptions I give about what tier would cost; hence the ~ L$price in my listings.

NeoBokrug Elytis: This week, I will be doing my big audit I missed out on doing in January, and so parcel prices will reflect that; while also getting some redecor.

NeoBokrug Elytis: Caledon and New Toulouse do not have that system, yet. I will be changing that before the summer.
NeoBokrug Elytis: Since last summer, I’ve seen the L$ creeping up and up to the USD, and it’s impossible for me to cash out at what I used to. Every month it costs me anothre L$1 it seems. So far that’s about a 4% change.

NeoBokrug Elytis: And, while I don’t like to speak of RL things, the economy of things does affect what we pay in SL. I anticipate things are going to keep going that direction for a while.

NeoBokrug Elytis: As a Solution Provider, many of my potential clients were limited by the fact they needed a system with a GPU to be in SL. I think the Zero Viewer is perhaps the smartes thing LL has done in a long time. I think the mobile viewer is also nice.

Candide LeMay: i agree that zero is a good idea, but who’s going to foot the bill? they made the firestorm version of zero cost L and people were like nope, we are not paying
NeoBokrug Elytis: I don’t think zero.secondlife.com will be free forever. LL pays L$1.75 per hour for a user to use it. I think it is free right now, to help them work out the bugs. And when its not free, it won’t cost that much. It is in LLs interest to keep it cheap.
NeoBokrug Elytis: I think new (possibly verified) accounts, will get some free time. Kind of a nice sampler, while instructed to download a desktop viewer.
NeoBokrug Elytis: But if we can reduce the steps to getting people inworld and familiar with the platform, it is a boon.
NeoBokrug Elytis: Once they get a foothold, they’ll be more inclined to use the desktop application.
NeoBokrug Elytis: And that makes sense to me.
Sketchkat Blackflag: yeah… where it’ll be beneficial from having to pay after their “trial”, when desktop is technically free
NeoBokrug Elytis: And regarding the pay to play Candide; folks WILL pay to use it.
NeoBokrug Elytis: And who knows, maybe some hours will come with a premium subscription.
Storm Thunders: A lot of it depends on whether they have a desktop/laptop. So many people have only a phone.
NeoBokrug Elytis: ALso, the SL viewer is getting a ton of under-the-hood updates. Even with the PBR updates, things are slowly starting to work again on older system. Work, and work faster.

III. THE ROLEPLAY & EVENTS

Aposiopesis Fullstop: When I tried Zero, it worked as well as on my desktop. So many people have said they can’t play the game due to lag that it genuinely might mitigate their problems a lot.
