Jubal Quintus passed away suddenly on February 11th. On the following Sunday, Wastelanders new and old gathered at The Bunker to celebrate his memory by sharing pictures, stories, and his own works.

[2018/02/18 12:01] Aposiopesis Fullstop: Here in Second Life, we have a unique perspective. When we look at the avatars around us, we don’t see their physical bodies. We don’t see their age. We don’t see their size. We don’t see their gender or race, their health or their wealth. We see what people choose to present. Even if they’re a Day One noob in a Library avatar, it’s one that they’ve chosen to use to express themselves.
[2018/02/18 12:02] Aposiopesis Fullstop: The first thing we see of someone is a stylistic choice. The first thing we see of someone is their art.
[2018/02/18 12:02] Aposiopesis Fullstop: This world is virtual and ephemeral, but it’s still real. It is as real as a painting. It is as real as a story or a song. It is as real as any play – our sets and costumes and props are simply made of pixels and code.
[2018/02/18 12:02] Aposiopesis Fullstop: In the over-eleven years of The Wastelands, hundreds of us have come through this Bunker and stepped out onto the sand. And we’ve done even more weirdness. Together, we’ve made this world, this community, this culture. We create, we collaborate, we share, we spread. We do things that inspire other things that inspire still other things. We run around in each others’ imaginations.
[2018/02/18 12:02] Aposiopesis Fullstop: It may seem like a long time and a lot of people. But in the end, we are few, and we are brief. Our minds and imaginations can only do so much for so long.
[2018/02/18 12:03] Aposiopesis Fullstop: When any one mind is gone from us, the whole of the creation is diminished.
[2018/02/18 12:03] Aposiopesis Fullstop: Whether you knew Jubal or not, his is a deep and painful loss.
[2018/02/18 12:03] Aposiopesis Fullstop: But Wastelanders are familiar with loss. In our stories, we’re cast adrift in a fragmented world. We see the wreckage of past creations and we have no way to know about their creators. We don’t know what things were. We don’t know what things meant. We could make the world better again, if only we knew how. But we don’t.
[2018/02/18 12:03] Aposiopesis Fullstop: And that’s why, here and now, we remember.
[2018/02/18 12:04] Aposiopesis Fullstop: That’s why, this time around, we hold tight to our knowledge. We know that THINGS come and go, that THINGS can be built and destroyed and rebuilt time and time again. It’s information, imagination, and memory that will fade away in time – unless they’re cherished and preserved and passed along.
[2018/02/18 12:04] Aposiopesis Fullstop: And that’s why we are here today.
[2018/02/18 12:04] Aposiopesis Fullstop: We are here to share our memories of Jubal. Of all that he shared with us, or did for us, or meant to us.

[2018/02/18 12:04] Aposiopesis Fullstop: To me, death isn’t black and bones. To me, death is beige and feathers. Beige for the sands – the sands that give, the sands that take. But the sand again becomes stone someday – and that stone, too, becomes sand. Things may come and go, things may change form and function. Yet it is part of an eternal cycle.
[2018/02/18 12:04] Aposiopesis Fullstop: But maybe there’s more than the sandy skin of the physical world. Maybe there’s something in us, feathered and fleeting and windborne, that can transcend those cycles of rocks and sand. Something that’s no longer limited to left and right, back and forth, past and future, but that propel us through new and once-unknowable dimensions of up and down.
[2018/02/18 12:05] Aposiopesis Fullstop: Who knows if, after death, after the end of thing-ness, some spirit still remains – freed from the terrestrial cycles, freed to soar in incomprehensible ways through a realm 90 degrees from real.
[2018/02/18 12:05] Aposiopesis Fullstop: But, come what may, I hope that Jubal, and everyone who has cared for him and his creations, will be able to find some peace.

So I will give it my best shot… Jubal and I didn’t always see eye to eye on everything — but I think that was a good thing. He challenged my perceptions of what this community is and could be. Certainly all of us here are at least a little shaped and molded from our interactions with him, in character and out. Both of his Trade Post incarnations is a legacy many have tried to imitate, and have vehimiatantly failed to do so. I don’t think anything will ever hold a candle to that artistic expression of his. During the times it was gone people spoke of it as if a legend of it’s own. People still do to this day. The things he’s done for us will never be forgotten.
That being said, I would like to keep his inworld character alive. Unseen but spoken of by the NPCs of the estate. I know it’s a stretch for those who may have already RPed dealing with his loss, but let’s retcon that

Jubal and I also did not agree on everything but we had great discussions, both in character and out of character about the Wastelands, the culture, his suspicions and distrust of the Tin Man and the masheens, his firm belief in the ability of the Wastelanders to be more than just people plugging junk in a box and hoping for something to come out. I enjoyed those discussions and will miss him.
