Community Meeting: March 06, 2021

Below, belatedly, is a summary of the March Community Meeting, the logs having been temporarily stolen by giant rats.  It’s followed by its chat logs – which have been gently edited for formatting, to put questions and answers in bold for easy skimming, and to omit greetings and farewells and other such asides.  Meetings are hosted by Estate owner NeoBokrug Elytis at 2:00 pm on – starting in March – the first Saturday of every month at The Potato Farm in The Wastelands, and the discussion is typically divided into three main topics: Estate, Game, and Roleplay & Events.  Everyone is welcome to attend!


ESTATE:
➳  Project Uplift seems to be causing occasional problems with script runtimes.
➳ Occupancy has remained stable.  (But we could always use new residents!)
➳ Draxtor has taken some footage of The Wastelands, and has received some resident messages, for an upcoming Destination Guide or possibly Makers of Second Life video.
➳ The Secret Project is still secret – but there’s been a small-but-significant recent development that may mean the final yea or nay is coming soon!

GAME:
➳ The bots have been moved to a Raspberry Pi 2 that shares the same circuit – with backup – as the router, so they don’t get disconnected as often.
➳ Neo is working on a “universal salvage script” that would make all game salvage share some bytecode with other items – possibly reducing the script memory the region needs to use.
➳ Sharing the same fundamentals will also make it easier to script the different kinds of salvage and give them their different characteristics.
➳ Neo’s working on changes to the DoT system that will separate DoT code from the main health processing code – and that can also handle Healing Over Time, and can also apply DoTs or HoTs on very long timescales, allowing for mechaics like addictions and diseases.
➳ These DoT changes would also be easier to tweak: they wouldn’t be hardcoded into the weapons or the environmental damage.
➳ It may also include entirely new types of DoTs!
➳ The HUD’s appearance may be redesigned to make it more intuitive.
➳ Saul the Food Trader is still dead.

ROLEPLAY & EVENTS:
Saturday Schedule Shakeup:
Community Meetings have moved to the first Saturday of the month! This should reduce cancellations and conflicts due to holidays.
The current plan:
First Saturday: Community Meeting – 2pm
Second Saturday: Barrelhead Bazaar – 11am
Third Saturday: Wasted Raiders’ Raid – Noon
Last Saturday: Skull Ball – 2pm

➳ The Red Revival, a Ghoul-for-a-day festival, will be held April 17.  Characters who are interested in using it as an opportunity to become a Ghoul permanently should get in touch with Apo!

NeoBokrug Elytis: Starting with testate stuff, Uplift seems to be causing occasional problems here and there. Most of any estate work I do is related to just cleaning up things and adding redundancy.
NeoBokrug Elytis: I’ve also been exploring various options to put grid-status updates into the discord server.
NeoBokrug Elytis: Occupancy has been the same-ish. Some people leaving, some people coming.
NeoBokrug Elytis: We also had some coverage by Draxtor for either a Destination Guide video, or Makers of Second Life video. A few folks gave voice-overs to him, but I haven’t really heard much back from him. He has let me know he’s really busy with every email I’ve sent though. So we may just have to wait a long time.
NeoBokrug Elytis: Before any progress is made on that.

NeoBokrug Elytis: Secret project has glacial pace, but made a small — but possibly significant — move a couple days ago. HOPEFULLY It gets the final thumbs up, and we can progress. I think before the month is over we’ll know wether or not the past year of effort will yield results, or if it was all in vain. Aside from those things, there’s not too much terribly going on estate wise. Mostly hurry-up-and-wait scenarios.

NeoBokrug Elytis: With the great Texas cold-pocalypse (we were fine), it reminded me that I should move the bots to a circuit on the home network that has power all the time. So I spent a weekend moving them to an older raspberry pi (to free up the better one for other personal projects) and put them on the same UPS backup as the router.
Memory Harker: *thumbs-up*
NeoBokrug Elytis: THey’re also not connected to my network with wifi anymore, with a cat5 instead, and should be quite a bit more stable with their connections. As of late I’ve noticed they’re losing their connections a lot more.
NeoBokrug Elytis: But all the bots exist on a little raspberry pi 2 now.

NeoBokrug Elytis: I could probably cram in 2-4x as many bots if I wanted to, but I would rather move them all to animesh inworld things.
NeoBokrug Elytis: I felt like, after uplift, they seem to be having connection issues from time to time.
NeoBokrug Elytis: And because I suck at coding I guess, they didn’t restart like they should have.
NeoBokrug Elytis: Or maybe the little wifi component of the raspberry pi 3, was just getting tired. IDK.

NeoBokrug Elytis: I have also been working on a “universal” salvage script. Since script times on the regions of the estate are kind of becoming trash since uplift, I think 100s of variants to salvage scripts aren’t helping. With a couple changes I can ensure that each item shares bytecode with other items. But that means I need to work on them. Hopefully, that will reduce script memory the region uses, AND maybe free up some resources. IDK at this point.

NeoBokrug Elytis: While a hunk of rubber and a cinderblock are pretty much the same code, a couple hardcoded internal variables are different, and if I understand how simulators work, those differences make them have different bytecode stacks on the region.

Aposiopesis Fullstop: Yeah. Unless absolutely everyone swapped out every rezzed salvage item they had out, would it help?
Aposiopesis Fullstop: And even if we did, would it help *much?*
NeoBokrug Elytis: But if all of them share the same code, then load up remote variables, they share the same bytecode.

NeoBokrug Elytis: In time it would help, because items would slowly replace themselves, and it would be a much more responsible thing to do given that we’ve got 300+ unique items now.

NeoBokrug Elytis: I spend several hours trawling through the JIRA, filing JIRAs as feature suggestions, doing what I can to help increase region performance, and nothing has really happened because of that.
NeoBokrug Elytis: So I think until LL is done with the uplift woes, we’re on their schedule of waiting for any improvements.
NeoBokrug Elytis: That’s about it for game stuff. I wanna get this script done because it does have it’s benefits in the end beyond just performance gains for regions.

Aposiopesis Fullstop: Is that the same sort of universal script system you were talking about that would make all the different scrap, foods, etc. sort of the same thing?
Candide LeMay: i have noticed weapons take a long time to get active after attaching, but i guess that’s the same LL category
NeoBokrug Elytis: Yes
NeoBokrug Elytis: Yeah Candide. Any changes to how things perform as of late, are all on LLs shoulders.

Candide LeMay: i’ve seen people report it on the forums too, scripts don’t run for 2-6 seconds after you rez the prim, which is nuts

NeoBokrug Elytis: I think LL is working on a fix for that (again)

Aposiopesis Fullstop: The changes to the metabolism system mean that having different amounts of food in your system give you a different max health. We’ve got a Healing Masheen to make sure everyone’s at an even 100% for Fight Night. But is it possible to make some sort of Temporary Food thing that would get everyone up to 100% food – but ONLY for the next hour?
NeoBokrug Elytis: Yeah, but if we’re being honest I am pretty burnt out on trying to optimize for, and fix bug cause by LL.
Aposiopesis Fullstop: Like a WL: Dirt Puck that fills your belly. Then you just barf back to what you had been beforehand when the event is over. :V

NeoBokrug Elytis: While burnt out on some scripts last week, I went into build mode and started working on a new HUD design. I know the rusty panel is nice, but it’s kind of a waste of screen space, and not super intuitive.

Aposiopesis Fullstop: You expend a lot of the food reserves to cure DoTs. Being idle makes you lose food WAAAAAY wonderfuly slower than we used to! But DoTs might as well stick a crazy straw in your stomach and suck out all your food.

NeoBokrug Elytis: So you might get lucky, you might not.
NeoBokrug Elytis: I don’t want the game to be super transparent about it’s mechanics. I am very against that concept.
NeoBokrug Elytis: But I like to think that if you know the general idea of the rules, you can know what to expect.
Candide LeMay: i’m advocating a random time up to a shorter maximum
NeoBokrug Elytis: The next major update to the HUD is a DoT engine update, so I can create more than just 5 types of dots. Differing variables of the same flavors of suffering, as well as new flavors of suffering, but I plan to keep classic dots in.
Candide LeMay: also what damage resistance does medkit provide? if you’re DOTed and take a medkit the DOT will continue to do damage
Aposiopesis Fullstop: I’m not sure, though. I never know if I’m going to end up fine, hungry, or starving at the end of a Fight Night round, whether I’ve hit traps or not. Just because of losing food to cure the DoTs from weapons.

NeoBokrug Elytis: Candidie, if you’re already under the effects of a medkit: Your chances of reducing a DoT effects duration is doubled, you get 10% damage resistance to incoming damage, and you get 5% food.

Candide LeMay: i’m just saying that a single event like a bomb should not be able to bring you down to 11% health from full, that’s too excessive
NeoBokrug Elytis: The primary reason I want to revamp the dot system is two-fold
NeoBokrug Elytis: 1) Remove the dot code from the primary health processor code (that’s easy)
NeoBokrug Elytis: 2) Build a system that can handle HoT (healing over time), as well as looong (weeks) effects, like diseases, addictions, etc.

Candide LeMay: bombs do like 40% on explosion at lest. i’ve never seen a bomb do “barely a scratch” .but that’s ok. it’s the DOT it triggers on explosion that needs a shorter duration

NeoBokrug Elytis: Hunger and health are very “flexible stats”, they go up and down all the time while you play the game. I do not expect everyone to be 100% of anything all the time. There’s no peak performance here. Just like in a post-apocalyptic environment, you get by on your current state.

I think I had been thinking more of Fight Night as a sort of exhibition match, a bit independent of that – but, yeah, everyone’s got to bring their own bullets, to say nothing of their own weapons, so having your own food does also make sense to keep us all on an even keel, I suppose.
