Memorial Service For Benjamin Bigdipper

On June 10, 2020, long time resident Benjamin Bigdipper passed away suddenly, much to the shock of family and friends, both in RL and Second Life.

I’ve never had more fun in my life than I did all of the times I got to spend with him. I was also fortunate enough to know the man behind the avatar but there was no difference. He was unashamedly himself. Always.

And I could always count on him being there. There were times when I was so shitty to him. For my own stupid reasons, no fault of his. But he was always there. And when we would have our stupid little fights he would always come back. I feel so guilty about that stuff now and I’m glad that the last few years we had together were free from all that crap. I just hope he knew how loved and appreciated he was. I think he did. He spoke so highly of so many of you here.

It may have only been a few years that we really hung out, but I did end up spending a lot of time with him, and, as others have said, he was on voice a lot, and was totally himself all of the time. So, getting to know Ben was a quick process. And for so many of us, it seems, Ben became a very integral part of SL.

But, as others have said, most of the time, Ben just wanted to hang out and shoot the shit and be pals. I am forever indebted to him, for his help and for his friendship and for all the fun times.

Not necessarily that they’d agree with him, but that they’d have thought enough to really understand themselves and what they believed, and that they’d explain it.

After all, he taught himself English with such fluency that I knew some people were surprised he knew German, as well – and he didn’t have much regard for anyone who wouldn’t bother to take their own thoughts seriously enough to express them well.

And for all that he tried to analyze taboo and discomfort, to investigate the edges and boundaries with calipers and rulers, to shake the World-Tree itself until it explained itself… often, it was just that culture is what it is.
