Community Meeting: August 7, 2021

Below is a short summary of the latest Community Meeting, followed by its chat logs – which have been gently edited for formatting, to put questions and answers in bold for easy skimming, and to omit greetings and farewells and other such asides.  Meetings are hosted by Estate owner NeoBokrug Elytis at 2:00 pm on the first Saturday of every month at The Potato Farm in The Wastelands, and the discussion is typically divided into three main topics: Estate, Game, and Roleplay & Events.  Everyone is welcome to attend!


ESTATE:

➳ Occupancy has held steady, but will hopefully be increasing as summer ends.
➳ Progress continues on the Community Gateway: early testing showed that one of the challenges wasn’t effectively teaching or testing things as intended, but an updated method is in the works!
➳ Discussion on how to make less-occupied regions more appealing: Neo’s considering an idea where, if a region reaches 75% occupancy, its remaining parcels will have a higher buy-in cost (but not higher tier) to help drive purchases in other regions.
➳ Some of the new creations made by the WLPW creators will be made available to residents this weekend.

GAME:
Damage Over Time (DoT) Processing Updates
➳ HUD Update!  The DoT processing has been moved into a separate co-processing script, freeing up memory for the core script.
➳ This will allow for classic DoTs, new DoTs, diseases, addictions, and short- and long-term buffs that persist even if the HUD is removed.
➳ Radiation now does much less damage – but lasts a much longer time and does not heal by metabolism.
➳ The next DoT to change will be Fire – which will start small and grow into a larger and more damaging fire that can be put out by Healing Machines or by being waist-deep in water. A big enough fire can be spread to other players.
➳ Bleed DoTs will start strong and grow weaker over time, becoming easier to naturally heal by metabolism.
➳ Poison DoTs will last a long time, and will fluctuate in intensity – sometimes mild, then an intense wave of damage.
Planned Updates
➳ The HUD itself will get a makeover before long.
➳ Adding racial modifiers: stats, buffs, and abilities will be affected by the player’s chosen Playable Race.
➳ The HUD has secretly had a dormant and non-functional Hydration system.  After the future Food update as part of the universal salvage script, it will be fully armed and operational.
➳ Some new items may be created, and/or existing game items may get new functions – for example, Bloodmoss might help heal Bleed DoTs.
➳ Wild Plants and weather updates are still on the agenda.
➳ Rustmouth may be retired completely, but is definitely on hiatus until life stops imitating art so much.
➳ The War Zone flag has received some tweaks to adapt it to the new DoT system, and it may be tweaked further later on.
➳ Saul the Food Trader is still dead.

ROLEPLAY & EVENTS:
➳ The Rondyvoo, a rustic trading festival, will take place on Saturday, August 28. If you’d like to host a sub-event for it, or want a trading stall to sell “character-made” goods, get in touch with Apo!

NeoBokrug Elytis: Hey everyone who showed up! Okay! As per the usual, we’ll talk about the three main aspects of the estate, land, game, RP & events; with time for questions in between.
NeoBokrug Elytis: Starting with the estate, we’re still making slow progress on Northgate. There was a challenge activity I had made, that wasn’t as intuitive as I thought for the few people we tested it with. xrawva had a much better idea that I did, so I am going to shit to making that happen. There’s a small collection of WLPW items done, I plan to box those up and make those available to current residents tonight or tomorrow night. Let’s just say tomorrow night to be sure.
NeoBokrug Elytis: Occupancy remains the same, had some people move in, had some people move out, dolin’ all right for summer; all things considered.
NeoBokrug Elytis: We should see a bump in occupancy here in the fall, then things will wind down in december.

NeoBokrug Elytis: I have been playing with the idea in my head that, if region get to 75% occupancy or more, that parcels sold by the estate would cost 50% more than they do now, with the same 2 weeks of tier. The idea behind this is, it would encourage folks to live in less occupied regions, as well as bring back some property value to those who eventually want to sell their plots. I know I am the main driving factor of the land market here, but I don’t really have any sort of policy about how I do sale prices other than 2 weeks of tier is the price.

Candide LeMay: well WL and JY are almost full… yet that doesn’t seem to drive people to the other sims, so i’m not sure it would have any effect

NeoBokrug Elytis: True, but I thought about the early days when a small parcel used to cost folks 6k, with minimal tier.
Aposiopesis Fullstop: I remember that the initial buy-in used to be four weeks’ worth of tier, so that’d still be an easier hurdle than that
NeoBokrug Elytis: And how the erosion of that “nice spot” cost has basically just become the tier left.
NeoBokrug Elytis: I dunno, I am not super married to the idea, just a thought.
Candide LeMay: i think there would have to be more land flipping going on for that to matter

Aposiopesis Fullstop: Yeah, some people might have a build that they really want to have in, specifically, the Junkyard or Wastelands proper, and they might not put it in the Fissure or Stygian just because it’d be cheaper to put it there.
NeoBokrug Elytis: I guess I’ll chew on it more, and talk with the devs about it. Irk, I see it as encouraging them to move to a less occupied region. I do enjoy how regions have sub-communities, and I think that’s important. I know I can’t shape that in any capacity, but it would be nice.

Aposiopesis Fullstop: Stygian does need some love – maybe just try to figure out what factors into people not wanting to buy land there?

Goat the Devil (immortan.doge): That was my thoughts Apo. If there is an aversion for a region, it’d be good to identify the cause.
Rax Stooge: Stygian and JY are super laggy for me, so I avoid them

NeoBokrug Elytis: I could also maybe script it so popular regions come with and cost 4 weeks of tier, while less popular regions are 2, but that’s a bit of a headache.

Sandling Honey: I personally always enjoyed the Wastelands and JY for having remnaints of urbanization in them – as in, themewise I always felt it to fit the best with having homes there

Goat the Devil (immortan.doge): The attraction is grouped tight in the center for both regions. They are awesome, but the flow stops once it hits the resident parcels.
Sandling Honey: Yeah that’s kind of what I was getting at as well
Sandling Honey: I always found the urban areas a bit too desolate, iron perhaps for the Wastelands haha
Aposiopesis Fullstop: And it could be a navigation thing? There’s no way around the crater but around; there’s no way around the Fissure but that one path.

NeoBokrug Elytis: I think the central landmarks are important, otherwise the entire estate is just sprawling land. That way folks get some nice space between neighbors and something interesting to look at near them.

Sandling Honey: Might be for those that game, but I simply found the surrounding environment to be more cozy in the Wastes and the Junkyard – even the swamp
Candide LeMay: well it seems not many people find it attractive
Sandling Honey: I guess in the surrounding areas of say Stygian, things are indeed just.. well.. desert
NeoBokrug Elytis: It’s cozy because parcel borders are right on each other, an dthe southern regions are not.
Sheala (sheala.olivieri): I do. It’s always worked well. Stygian has that abandoned feel, which, ya know, is kinda the point of the Wastes right?
NeoBokrug Elytis: Yar.
Aposiopesis Fullstop: Yeah, it might not be for everyone, but I’ve talked to folks who really didn’t want the ruined-suburb thing, and wanted something more wild.
Sandling Honey: Yeah I totally get that – And often I found retreat exactly to those places for exactly that too

Goat the Devil (immortan.doge): My thoughts are would be to find ways to thematically spruce up the regions. Extend what makes them great further from the center.

NeoBokrug Elytis: Moving on to HUD stuff. The DoT system got completely redone, and moved to it’s own script. This entire update has been brewing in my head for a super long time. It’s the only way I can free up memory in the core processing script, to get in a ton of backburner ideas that have been stagnating. I have spent more time thinking about it than most other things regarding the game. Cause I needed to do it right, and it needs to be flexible enough to handle future updates with little fuss.

NeoBokrug Elytis: I should probably rename it from “The DoT” system to something else, because it’s more of a co-processor of various buffs, debuffs, damage, and whatever else the HUD handles. It’s built for classic Damage over TIme, but also for diseases, addictions, long and short term buffs from things.

NeoBokrug Elytis: I know 10k is only 1/6th of a script, but I think it’s all the wiggle room I need to add more things, and when all else fails I add to the co-processor.
NeoBokrug Elytis: I will probably move how hunger and hydration operate to the co-processor (if I can), just to free up more script memory.

NeoBokrug Elytis: And keep in mind, this whole system that is the game, is almost 15 years old, — just 15 years of bad patching on a system that somehow still works.
Dassina Andel: Hunger system I think is at a good point.
Aposiopesis Fullstop: Yeah, the co-processor could be all the modifiers on the things that the main script does..

Candide LeMay: re: new hud. i haven’t noticed any problems but i’m not a fan of the dot effect blinking. especially radiation now causes like 5 minutes of blinking into my face

NeoBokrug Elytis: One strange thing we noticed at last fight night is, that Hunger healed DoTs way too much; which means the old single script wasn’t fully processing DoTs. To be fair it had a LOT to do, and maybe it wasn’t ready for all of that.
NeoBokrug Elytis: The blinking will stay for now. I think it’s useful because it gets folks attention, but I am going to be working on a new HUD here soon-ish.
Candide LeMay: can you make it blink less often?
NeoBokrug Elytis: No

NeoBokrug Elytis: I just said it’s going to stay, because I am not going to waste time coding for the old UI of the HUD when I have a new on on the way.
NeoBokrug Elytis: THe next DoT I am going to work on is fire. WHich will start out small, and evolve into a bigger version as time goes on. There will be a mechanic where Healing Masheens OR being waist deep in water can cure them.
NeoBokrug Elytis: Otherwise you’re going to have to wait until the DoT runs it’s course.

NeoBokrug Elytis: I think just to pad out the core processor with memory, I am going to add racial modifiers, just to make sure I can fit it in there, before I add new features. That feature may not be done for a long time though, but I have a good idea of the things I want in there.

NeoBokrug Elytis: Before Warzone, I just want to remind people that the only visible effects of the HUD are the blood splatters and healing. Currently fire, poison, bleeding, and radiation effects are disabled due to a JIRA issue that may make your HUD crash because of “ghost memory”.
