Below is a short summary of the latest Community Meeting, followed by its chat logs – which have been gently edited for formatting, to put questions and answers in bold for easy skimming, and to omit greetings and farewells and other such asides. Meetings are hosted by Estate owner NeoBokrug Elytis at 2:00 pm on the first Saturday of every month at The Potato Farm in The Wastelands, and the discussion is typically divided into three main topics: Estate, Game, and Roleplay & Events. Everyone is welcome to attend!
ESTATE:
➳ This was an extra-long two-hour Community Meeting to discuss some recent and upcoming changes, and to discuss some possible new approaches to land and events promotion.
➳ It didn’t follow the typical Estate, Game, Rolepay & Events format as a result.
Occupancy
➳ Occupancy went down drastically in the past month, though the Estate still operates at a profit.
➳ Potential causes include the rising cost of living, longer work hours reducing free time for SL, more people going out for “post-covid” activities, and current events making a post-apocalypse feel less fantastic and escapist.
➳ The start of summer also usually correlates to finals and the start of summer jobs for students, increased childcare responsibilities for visitors and residents who are parents, and warmer weather and more outdoor activities for all.
➳ Some people had to move to smaller plots or leave after last month’s tier increase.
➳ The bot now sends tier reminders through IM instead of through local chat, and this seems to be more effective so far.
➳ Neo is working on an updated tier auto-pay mailbox with more features, but this is lower priority.
Land Marketing
➳ Neo examined other themed estates and found that, even with the tier increase, The Wastelands’ pricing is still competitive (and sometimes slightly cheaper.)
➳ Most other estates have inworld Land Stores, so he’s working on creating one.
➳ Based on that research, and discussions with experts in SL marketing, he’s also shortened the text on the landing parcels to add keywords and to make the website URL appear in the text.
➳ This should help The Wastelands get higher on SL search results for “wastelands,” and also keep visitors from mistaking us for the once-shuttered “adult dark roleplaying” estate City of Lost Angels, whose new post-apocalyptic reboot has a region called “Lost Wastelands.”
➳ Neo made it clear that The Wastelands will never be an Adult region.
➳ We could try to create more machinimas, music videos, or other short videos to promote The Wastelands.
➳ Neo is also making adjustments to the unowned land in the four main regions to create some smaller (and therefore cheaper) parcels. Look for them starting this week!
Cross-Promotion
➳ Suggesting more outreach to other roleplay communities for one-off encounters, or “web ring” style teleports.
➳ Discussing the possibility of sponsoring more shopping events.
➳ Considering a wider promotion of Promageddon, since it’s a more newcomer-friendly conceit.
Event Promotion
➳ Event attendance has been tepid, likely for the same reasons as lower occupancy.
➳ There have been concerns that the Discord event announcements aren’t properly notifying people about events.
➳ Looking into additional ways to give notices:
☞ An inworld poster at each region’s landing point showing today’s events and the weekly schedule
☞ An inworld Subsicribe-O-Matic style object or bot that sends local chat notices or IMs.
☞ Adding the Sesh bot to the Discord server to allow more (and more-visible) notices.
➳ Discussing how to make the Ruin Nation group easier to join, possibly with a poster and an inworld captcha.
➳ Maintaining the current methods of Event notices as well:
☞ Weekly Group Notices to The Wastelands and Ruin Nation groups, and group chats at the start of events
☞ Weekly and daily Group Notices to The N
☞ Discord notices weekly in the #announcements channel and through the Events listings.

➳ Linden Lab has launched a new region type, the Event Region, which would allow up to 175 avatars, 30k prims, and a 20% improvement on script times. However, even its introductory price point of $599/mo is not a good value for The Wastelands, to say nothing of the $999/mo actual price.
Miscellany
➳ The new parcel and land store efforts take precedence, but work continues on the Northgate Community Gateway.
➳ The Wastelands Public Works program is still accepting volunteers to help create the buildings, props, and other assets!
➳ There’s still a plan to add a roleplay wing to the Northgate tutorials.
➳ Look up: we have a new broken moon – with moon phases – courtesy of Anne Cloud!
➳ Neo had considered shuttering it, but the Patreon is continuing, for those who want to support The Wastelands without or in addition to land ownership.
GAME:
➳ Neo started working on a new craftable salvage item around Easter, but has not had time to finish it yet.
➳ Linden Lab is working on improvements to EEP, but they still may not do the things Neo hopes it will do; he may have to make an opt-in attachment instead.
ROLEPLAY & EVENTS:

As per the unusual — we’re ditching the usual this month with a two hour long community meeting. There typically are three primary topics, but since everything will probably be intermingling this month, we’re going to have a sort of organic discussion peppered with things I bring up.

Beezle (beezle.warburton): Leslie just works fucked up shifts — she’s cook. And I’ve just been having health things that’ve made me a bit “meh”
Aposiopesis Fullstop: I don’t think it’s the theme – and there’s nothing we could or should do about it if it were. I think it’s more just… everything costs more, and people have to pick up new side-hustles or cut their budgets for fun things.
NeoBokrug Elytis: Yeah, having a lot of people say they’re working more makes me feel a bit better. I typically am the one to assume it’s something I am doing that’s keeping people out. I do try to reassure myself that people are just busy, but my brain won’t believe it.
NeoBokrug Elytis: I man, not good that everyone is working more.
NeoBokrug Elytis: But good that it’s not “Post apocalypse makes me depressed now”
Aposiopesis Fullstop: I mean, even if that were part of it – what would you reasonably do about that?

NeoBokrug Elytis: Yeah, which brings me to the tier increase. I saw a few people tier down, and others leave after the increase. WHICH i can understand. And I wish I didn’t have to bump tier up — but I’ve never done anything to account for inflation over 15 years, and if my costs go up, I at the very least have to apply that change to the costs.
Boghoss (hivejunker): i dont think anyone would dispute your needs or efforts to shelter the community from them
Tintosha (tayasha.tammas): I’ve mostly been busy doing some projects on the side, or my moods swings into playing something else instead of being on SL, plus work haha
NeoBokrug Elytis: Yeah, but I want to remain competitive.
Beezle (beezle.warburton): everything is costng more, why I haven’t glommed that second parcel I want >_<
NeoBokrug Elytis: I spend a few days last week just visiting other themed estates, and even after the tier bump I saw that we were at price, or cheaper than other places.
NeoBokrug Elytis: And just like you folks, I have had to increasingly chase down work — which normally would be contract work in SL — but that seems anemic too. So I have side-gigs myself that aren’t in SL. I feel like a lot of my time is just wasted on “getting” work.

NeoBokrug Elytis: THey were and are a very large old roleplaying estate, and I gotta tip my hat for them.
NeoBokrug Elytis: So we had our Spotlight by Linden Lab in January. ANd according to COLA blog, they started working on a new apocalyptic region 6 days after that

NeoBokrug Elytis: With a new story or something, all about the apocalypse.

NeoBokrug Elytis: But, being “Lost Wastelands”, and sucking up searches for Wastelands doesn’t sit right with me. I don’t own a trademark on it and no one should., But I think that’s shady riding out coattails.

Boghoss (hivejunker): it’s good they chose just after the wastelands was spotlighted to minimise the chance of them getting spotlighted.
Aposiopesis Fullstop: It’d make more sense to keep their original branding, you’d think.
NeoBokrug Elytis: So that’s a pressure I think that’s affecting the estate and people finding us.
NeoBokrug Elytis: We had people showing up here asking “Isn’t this COLA?” ANd I was like… no?

NeoBokrug Elytis: The BOT is sending tier reminders instead of an inworld object — and that actually seems a LOT better for folks. I haven’t had to remind anyone in a long time about tier.

NeoBokrug Elytis: While I was searching other themed communities about their tier rates; I noticed almost all of them have an inworld land store.
NeoBokrug Elytis: We do not. So that’s pretty high on my priority list of things to work on.
Beezle (beezle.warburton): Yeah, with all the group notices and everything from SL, it tends to trigger anti-spam, I quit letting Gmail handle spam and let Thunderbird do it — much better job.

NeoBokrug Elytis: I am still kind of wracking my brain on how to automate a lot of that. It’s going to take some serious work that I honestly don’t want to do.

Mutsy (mutsy.kaligawa): definitely need some sort of store in world for land info and rent options… people will realize this sooner than later and hopefully inspire to rent

Aposiopesis Fullstop: Do you think it might have anything to do with the parcel decorator? I love it, and I think it’s great to have something already there for folks to live in if they don’t want to build, and to show off the amazing things people make! I do also like the subtlety of our Land For Sale signs, versus the fullbright placard horrors I see in other places. But when a plot was for sale before, and there was bare sand (or mud) there, it was obvious that it was unowned and available.
Boghoss (hivejunker): or dear, that is a terrible observation but it’s probaby right isnt it
Aposiopesis Fullstop: But I’m wondering if visiting wandering folk somehow aren’t aware that the land is even rentable.
NeoBokrug Elytis: Not really, at least I don’t think so. The signs are supposed to be subtle. Other estates don’t even advertise on parcels because they have land stores.
Aposiopesis Fullstop: Gotcha. I absolutely think an inworld land store is a good idea!

NeoBokrug Elytis: If I can get Anne to rez the track, and some demo beetles, i will host a single event. From there, if people want it to be a regular thing, someone else will have to host it. But I will commit to leaving the track there until I decide to do something with Burnt Oak.

Aposiopesis Fullstop: I mentioned it earlier more vaguely, but: PROMAGEDDON is approaching at the end of the month – Saturday, May 28! A formal dance without the formality. Expect ragged dresses, stained suits, rusted jewelry, gunshot top hats, Mutant tribal finery, and more. I’ll also award L$1000 to my incredibly-subjective choice of Best Outfit – one Male, one Female. Even The Arena will be decked out in dire decorations! FIGHT NIGHT will be a special 2-vs-2 tournament — and the winning couple will be crowned Prom King and Prom Queen!
